Biography

Dr. Guangjun Nie is a CAS Distinguished Researcher and Deputy Director of the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) and a Distinguished Professor of NUST. He has served as the Chief Scientist of the National Major Scientific Research Programme on Nanoresearch (973) of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the recipient of the National Distinguished Young Persons Fund (NDYPF), and was selected as one of the "Introduction of Outstanding Talents from Abroad" programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with excellent graduation results. He is an expert of the State Council with special government allowance, and the leader of the Lu Jiaxi International Team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), an Adjunct Professor of the Houston Methodist Research Institute (Houston, USA), an Advanced Newton Scholar of the British Academy of Medical Sciences, an Honorary Professor of the University of Queensland (Queensland, Australia), and the first Director of the Materials, Biology and Precision Therapeutics Section of the Chinese Society of Biophysics. Since returning to China in 2008, he has established a laboratory of "Nanobiology and Nanobiomaterials" at the National Centre for Nanoscience, built up a 50-member multidisciplinary research team, established good cooperation with a number of renowned nanomedicine and life science laboratories in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, and collaborated with six Chinese nanomedicine and life science experts. We have established good cooperation with many renowned nanomedicine and life science laboratories in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, and have collaborated with 6 visiting professors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).


The group has trained nearly 100 Ph.D., postdoctoral, master and undergraduate students. The group has trained many professors and many of them are working in universities, hospitals, companies and other departments. He has received teaching awards such as the Outstanding Mentor Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Mentor Award of SABIC-CAS Scholarship of CAS, the Mentor Research Award of BHP Billiton (Australia) of CAS, the Zhu-Li Yuehua Outstanding Teacher Award of CAS, and the Outstanding Undergraduate Supervisor of College of Materials of CAS.


He has published 230 papers in Nature Biotechnology, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Communications and other important international academic journals; applied for 40 patents for anti-tumour applications and other related inventions ( He has applied for 40 patents related to anti-tumour applications (20 Chinese patents, 3 US patents and 4 patent transfers). The related research results have also been highlighted by Nature Biotechnology, Nature Materials, Science Translational Medicine, etc. Several articles have been selected as ESI highly cited papers. The development of intelligent DNA nanomachines for tumour therapy was selected as one of the top 10 scientific and technological advances in China in 2018.
